MORBIDITY SURVEILLANCE PLATFORM
WHAT WE DO?
The Clinic Department implements a surveillance system on morbility, the monitoring and coordination of research projects that contain clinical activities and establish a bridge between the Centre and the health authorities in the country.
In partnership with the district health authorities (District Health Service, Woman and Social Action), the CISM provides healthcare support to the District Hospital Manhiça and six other health centres in the proximity (Manhiça, Maragra, Malavele, Palmeira, Taninga and Ilha Josina Machel), contributing to the improvement of clinical care in the district. Currently, CISM supports the National Health System with specialist and general practitioners, medical technicians, nurses and assistants, being available 24 hours a day.
In the context of COVID-19, this service has been supporting health care, diagnosis and handling of patients, as well as the follow-up of positive cases, in coordination with the National Health System team, in some of the health areas covered by CISM.

Medical doctor, he joined CISM in 2009 and, since then, has coordinated several research studies, with particular emphasis on diarrhoeal diseases, including The Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS), as well as on respiratory diseases and invasive bacterial infections, notably studies on Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and pneumococcal disease. He has also led several studies in the field of tuberculosis and contributed to the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Network (CHAMPS) programme. Between 2010 and 2013, he participated in the CISM Research Training Programme, through which he obtained a Master's degree in Clinical Research and International Health from the University of Barcelona, Spain, in 2014, and subsequently completed his PhD at the same university in 2019.
