The district of Mopeia, in Zambézia province, will host in the coming months the implementation of an innovative project led by the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM), which aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of tongue swab testing for the detection of Tuberculosis (TB) among contacts of bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB patients.

The AFRICAI-RI project, the Pan-African Research Infrastructure for Collaborative Biomedical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence in Respiratory Care, was designed to significantly contribute to improving healthcare in Sub-Saharan Africa through the establishment of the region's first interconnected and multi-institutional medical imaging research infrastructure.

On 28 April, Francisco Manyanga Secondary School hosted the 2nd Edition of the Malaria Conference & Fair (MCF), an event that brought together students, researchers, health professionals, policy makers and cooperation partners, with the aim of strengthening awareness, promoting the sharing of scientific evidence, and mobilising society in the fight against malaria.

The clinical trial was conducted in a context where tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. In these cases, diagnosis continues to be particularly challenging due to the frequent occurrence of non-specific symptoms, extrapulmonary forms of the disease, and the difficulties many patients face in producing sputum (one of the main samples used for TB diagnosis).

The main objective of the visit was to establish the foundations for a strategic partnership between the two institutions, aimed at strengthening technical and scientific cooperation, with a focus on health research, professional training, and improving the quality of services provided to the population.

In particular, it seeks to investigate whether adding broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) to antiretroviral therapy can accelerate viral control in infants diagnosed with HIV, addressing persistent challenges, especially in high-burden settings.
