Sobre o evento

Genomic technologies are driving some of the innovative research that is currently being carried out. However, the benefits of these technologies will not be fully realized if they are not deployed worldwide (spirit of global solidarity). Attention to equity in the deployment of these technologies is essential for human health benefits.

Surveillance based on genomics is becoming an integral strategy for the control and elimination of diseases such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, foodborne illnesses, among others. Despite the potential benefits and the need to control the high burden of infectious diseases, genomic surveillance capacity remains low in many public health programs in Africa. It is not justifiable from an ethical or scientific point of view that countries with less resources have access to these technologies later than rich countries.

In this context, the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM), brings together its partners for a Webinar, whose main objective is to promote reflection and discussion on the adoption or expansion of the use of genomics for infectious diseases in Africa. This reflection will consist of three panels divided into the following themes/Perspectives:

  1. Perspective of the added value that the use of genomic technology brings.
  2. Investigators' perspective: What are the knowledge gaps for using genomic data against infectious diseases in Mozambique and elsewhere?
  3. Implementation (local planning, funding, expansion of training for key personnel and provision of low-cost computing equipment, materials and infrastructure), ethical, legal and social issues (ethical, legal, equitable use and responsible sharing of information obtained from methods genomics).
