The delegation from the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM) in Quelimane, Zambézia Province, received, on April 9, the visit of the new General Manager of Quelimane Central Hospital (HCQ), Ornelos Madeira, who recently took office replacing Dr. Ladino Suade. The main objective of the visit was to establish the foundations for a strategic partnership between the two institutions, aimed at strengthening technical and scientific cooperation, with a focus on health research, professional training, and improving the quality of services provided to the population.

According to an official note from HCQ, this collaboration is expected to drive the development of joint projects that contribute to more effective responses to challenges in the health sector. “The partnership with CISM represents an important step towards introducing new approaches based on scientific evidence, as well as strengthening social responsibility,” stated the head of the largest hospital unit in Zambézia.

During the visit, the General Manager, who previously served as Scientific Director of HCQ, was accompanied by the Clinical Director, Zefanias Zefanias, the Scientific Director, Celisa Mendonça, and the Hospital Administrator, Jassiara Esquene.

Quelimane Central Hospital is a strategic partner for CISM, particularly within the framework of the CHAMPS project, implemented in Quelimane since 2018, with the aim of studying the causes of mortality among children under five years of age. HCQ was selected as the implementation site due to being a referral facility equipped with basic pathology and bacteriology laboratories, and located in a province with high prevalence rates of malaria (34.9%) and HIV (17.1%) among the adult population—factors associated with high child mortality rates.

For the Coordinator of the Quelimane office and the CHAMPS programme, Fabião Luís, the visit of the General Manager marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between the two institutions. “This visit opens a new chapter of collaboration, with a focus on research and continuous improvement of health services. It also reaffirms the joint commitment of both institutions to promote quality care through strong and innovative partnerships,” he stated.

The CHAMPS project monitors and records vital events, including births, deaths among children under five, and pregnancies, with the aim of producing reliable data on child mortality. In Mozambique, the initiative is led by CISM Senior Researcher Inácio Mandomando and is funded by the Gates Foundation. In addition to Mozambique, CHAMPS operates in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
