SYMPOSIUM ON GLOBAL HEALTH OF THE MANHIÇA FOUNDATION

Three Decades of Science, Impact, and Future

The Manhiça Foundation Global Health Symposium is an annual event that brings together researchers, health professionals, students, policy-makers, and national and international partners to discuss the main challenges, scientific advances, and innovative solutions in the field of global health.

Organised by the Manhiça Foundation, the managing entity of the Manhiça Health Research Centre (CISM), the symposium serves as a strategic platform for strengthening scientific collaboration, sharing evidence, and promoting biomedical research in Africa.

Established in 1996 within the framework of a Bilateral Cooperation Programme between the Governments of Mozambique and Spain, with support from Hospital Clínic of the University of Barcelona through the Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica, CISM has contributed, over nearly three decades, to the prevention and control of diseases affecting the most vulnerable populations through scientific research, healthcare assistance, and human resources training.

Currently managed by the Manhiça Foundation, established in 2008, CISM has consolidated its position as a centre of excellence for research in Africa, with significant contributions in areas such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and bacterial infections. Its findings have influenced public health policies in Mozambique, including the introduction of vaccines into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), as well as the development of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine.

As part of the celebrations marking its 30th anniversary, the Manhiça Foundation is preparing the 5th edition of the Global Health Symposium, reaffirming its institutional commitment to science, innovation, and the strengthening of health research for Mozambique and the world.
