O QUE FAZEMOS?

​A Malária representa um dos principais problemas de Saúde Pública com maior peso na morbi-mortalidade, no mundo e em Moçambique em particular. Segundo a OMS, estima-se que em 2018 tenham ocorrido foram estimados cerca de 228 milhões de casos de malária e 405 mil mortes a nível global; destes casos, 93% (213 milhões) ocorreram na África subsaariana. Moçambique é um dos dez países com maior peso da malária no mundo, com a doença sendo responsável em cerca de 29% de todas mortes (42% em crianças menores de 5 anos). Dados do inquérito de indicadores de malária realizado em 2018, indicam que a prevalência de malária em crianças menores de 5 anos foi de 39% em Moçambique, variando de 1% na Cidade e Província de Maputo até 57% na província de Cabo Delgado.

O investimento na pesquisa para a malária tem vindo a aumentar com o relançamento do objectivo de eliminação da malária através da estratégia técnica global para a malária lançada em 2015 pela OMS; bem como pela mais recente iniciativa, também da OMS, designada “High Burden High Impact” (HBHI) lançada em Maputo em Novembro de 2018 que visa acelerar as medidas de controlo da malária em 10 países africanos mais a India. Estes países, incluindo Moçambique, contribuem para mais de 70% do peso global da malária. Ambas estratégias acima mencionadas têm a pesquisa como um pilar essencial para guiar a implementação das actividades com base em evidência científica.

A história do CISM está associada a iniciativa de desenvolvimento da vacina contra malária RTS,S, que contribuiu para o desenvolvimento de capacidade humana e institucional para pesquisa nesta área.

As ferramentas actualmente disponíveis são ainda insuficientes para se alcançar um controlo efectivo da malária. Para além da questão da resistência do parasita aos anti maláricos e do vector aos insecticidas, estas ferramentas não são totalmente eficazes, havendo necessidade de continuar a trabalhar no desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas de controlo (prevenção e tratamento) e/ou eliminação da malária.

Principais objectivos

  • Conceber e implementar estratégias inovadoras para o controlo e/ou eliminação da malária em diferentes níveis de transmissão em Moçambique

  • Compreender os mecanismos fisiopatológicos e imunológicos da malária, incluindo a identificação de eventos patogénicos cruciais no sequestro de parasitas e na resistência aos antimaláricos

  • Participar em ensaios clínicos de fármacos e vacinas contra malária

  • Desenvolver inteligência entomológica e participar no desenvolvimento de novas ferramentas para o controlo vectorial

  • Desenvolver pesquisa de implementação, de acordo com a agenda de pesquisa do Programa Nacional de Controlo da Malária (em anexo), que possa contribuir para guiar a implementação do programa nas áreas de comunicação para mudança de comportamento, controlo vectorial, prevenção da malária na gravidez e manejo de casos.

A sua principal área de investigação é a malária, um dos principais problemas de saúde que afecta principalmente crianças e mulheres grávidas, em Moçambique em particular. Já esteve envolvido em vários projetos de pesquisa relacionados à malária como co-investigador principal e investigador, entre outros estudos sobre a prevenção e controle da malária, incluindo ensaios de tratamento preventivo intermitente em bebês (IPTi) e avaliação clínica da segurança, eficácia e imunogenicidade da vacina candidata contra malária mais avançada, RTS, S/AS0. Actualmente, é igualmente Director Científico do CISM.
